Ash is a white substance produced by burning bones. The typical composition of ashes is approximately 55.82% calcium oxide, 42.39% phosphorus pentoxide, and 1.79% water. The specific composition of these compounds varies depending on the type of bones used, but the general formula for ashes is Ca5(OH)(PO4)3. The density of ashes is usually about 3.10 grams per milliliter, and the melting point is 1670°C (3038°F). Most bones are preserved with their cellular structure through firing. Ashes have various uses, such as fertilizer, polishing agent, or bone porcelain production.
